PIANO MUSIC” BACK TO LIFE AGAIN

AMADEUS Festival Vienna announces the first International Salon Music Piano Competition “Pianos&Soul”, to give visibility, promote and support the best talented young musicians from all over the world, as well as to bring the charms of “Salon Piano Music” to life again.

DEFINITION OF SALON MUSIC

“As we all know, salon music is called fantasies, songs without words, potpourris, impromptus, Bagatelles, etudes, nocturnes, scherzos, transcriptions, character pieces, variations, ballads, Polonaises, waltzes, mazurkas, boleros, etc. are also understood to be compositions with them a secondary purpose is connected, which are written, for example, to the means and advantages of highlight instruments in order to show skill […].”*

Around 1900, the term salon music referred to “modern production in small forms”.

These include “genre and character pieces, dances, mood images, melodies, figured pieces, preludes, etudes”**, often with picturesque, programmatic headings provided. 

Outstanding salon music in the best sense of the word is available from the following composers, among others: Anton Arensky, Roderich Bass, Lili Boulanger, Emmanuel Chabrier, Teresa Carreno, Cecile Chaminade, Ernst von Dohnanyi, Friedrich Gernsheim, Leopold Godowsky, Karl Goldmark, Josef Lamberg, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Enrique Granados, Edvard Grieg, Alfred Grünfeld, Fanny Hensel, E. W. Korngold, Theodor Leschetizky, Lise Maria Mayer, Moritz Moszkowski, Dora Pejacevic, Ede Poldini, Louis Ree, Carl Reinecke, Anton Rubinstein, Camille Saint-Saens, Emil Sauer, Xaver Scharwenka, Clara Schumann, Julius Schulhoff, Eduard Schütt, Ludvig Schytte, Christian Sinding.

FIRST. AIM

  1. AMADEUS Festival Vienna announces the first Salon Music Piano Competition "Pianos&Soul” that will reward the best young musicians at an international level.

  2. Participants guarantee the authorship and originality of the performances presented, as well as the absence of third-party rights over them, being responsible for any claims that may be made in this regard.

SECOND. ELIGIBILITY

  1. Talented young musicians, aged between 15 - 35 years on 31 December 2024 (both inclusive) are eligible.

  2. The participation must be individual. Collaborative or collective performance will not be admitted.

THIRD. REQUIREMENTS

  1. REPERTOIRE:

1.1. Candidates should submit pieces of “Salon Music for Piano solo” of contrasting styles

1.2. The submitted performances must consist of:

PART 1

One of the following pieces by F. Chopin:

Bolero op. 19

Ballade No. 1 op. 23

Ballade No. 2 op. 38

Barcarolle op. 60

And 

F. Chopin: Etude op. 10 No. 4

PART 2

A recital ranging from 30 to 50 minutes, which must include at least one or more pieces from the following list

C. Schumann: Romance op. 11 No. 1

C. Schumann: Scherzo No. 2 op. 14 

J. Marx: from “6 piano pieces”

E.W. Korngold: from “Marchenbilder” op. 3

A. Grünfeld: Soirée de Vienne

A. Grünfeld: Romance in F sharp Major op. 45 No.1

D. Pejacevic: from „Blumenleben op. 19“: No. 6 Rote Nelken

C. Chaminade: Arabesque No. 1 op. 61

E. Granados: Allegro de Concierto op. 46

1.3. The total programme duration must be at least 40 minutes but not more than 60 minutes. Applicants are allowed to use all the pieces from PART 2 to fill up the recital programme. However, creativity and originality when creating the repertoire by finding different music pieces in PART 2  will also be valued. 


2.  APPLICATION.

2.1. For the initial screening round, candidates will perform Piano solo works. All works must be performed from memory. 

2.2. The performance should be recorded with a single stationary camera. Every piece can be recorded separately, as long as the video is recorded with a single stationary camera. The musician’s entire body must be visible in the video including pedals. Editing of the single recording or video is not permitted. The selected works must be performed with all repeats. 

2.3. For video recordings of the repertoire, we recommend contacting the nearest Bösendorfer Salon or associated dealers. More information here.

2.4. All applications must be made using the form provided in the following link: “Pianos&Soul” COMPETITION 2024.

No other methods of submission will be accepted. A non-refundable 50 EUR application fee must be paid via bank transfer at the time of application form submission. The bank payment reference should be as follow:

2.5. Applications without payment will not be accepted.

3. SELECTION.

Selected candidates will be informed by email and will be invited to a personal interview with Mrs Karen Goh and Dr Wilson Goh (the Patron of the Competition), in person or via remote conferencing. 

4. FINAL ROUND.

4.1. Finalists will be invited to the final competition of the AMADEUS Festival Vienna 2024. This performance will be evaluated by our appointed Jury and the attending Public.

4.2. All finalists will be required to attend the Janoska Ensemble Workshop during the Festival. Please note that the workshop is complimentary for all finalists.

4.4. The Programme of the Final Competition on 28 June 2024: 

Part One: Finalists will perform the compulsory pieces selected by the Jury. The performance will be behind the curtains. 

Part Two: Finalists will perform works from the submitted repertoire selected by the Jury. The performance will be without curtains.

FOURTH. SUBMISSIONS AND DEADLINE

  1. Application forms, including all required documents and videos/links, must be submitted by the deadline.

    The application period will officially open on 08 January 2024 at 00:00 (CET). The deadline will be on 11 March 2024 until 00:00. (CET).

    Notes: The deadline now has been extended until 08 April 2024 (23:59 CET) 

FIFTH. BOARD OF JURY

INVITED JURY: AMADEUS Festival Vienna may, at her discretion invite jury members of good standing to join the Board of Jury.  

  • Prof. Dr. Clemens Hellsberg - Langzeitvorstand der Wiener Philharmoniker (a.D.) / Long-term board member of the Vienna Philharmonic (retd)

PUBLIC JURY: Live audience will vote for the Public Prize during the finals of the competition on 28 June 2024.

SIXTH. AWARDS

A. THE GRAND PRIZE: 

  • €5.000 EUROS

  • The Grand Prize winner will be appointed as a Bösendorfer-AMADEUS Young Artist and sign the corresponding agreement (see attached Bösendorfer-AMADEUS Young Artist Agreement ), worth approx. €8.000 (excl. VAT).

B. SECOND PRIZE:

  • €3.000 EUROS

  • A CD recording at the Bösendorfer Selection Room Wiener Neustadt (incl. mastering, graphics and 15 CDs, pressing optional) worth approx. €3.000 (excl. VAT).

C. THIRD PRIZE:

  • €1.000 EUROS

  • Opportunity to perform a concert at either the House of Engineers - Bösendorfer Hall or the Bösendorfer Salon, subject to venue availability. (worth €1.000,-excl. VAT).

D. PUBLIC PRIZE

  • Cash prize EUR 500,00 + an exclusive Bösendorfer Piano Factory tour with subsequent playing of various instruments as well as a Vienna tour in the footsteps of the most famous musical figures (incl. museum admissions) (for max. 4 persons) (worth €500,-excl. VAT) 2 days.

1. The prize money will be paid via bank transfer. 

2. All prize winners will be required to perform at the AMADEUS Festival Vienna 2025. All prize winners may also be invited to performances organised by the AMADEUS Festival Vienna. 

3. COMPETITION FINALISTS: Finalists will receive full festival passes to the AMADEUS Festival 2024. The accommodation of the finalists in the first-class Boarding House of "AMADEUS International School Vienna" (breakfast included) will be covered by AMADEUS Festival Vienna.

The finalists are fully responsible for providing the required documents, such as promotional materials, personal documents, and police checks, in a timely manner. 


SEVENTH. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

  1. Participants authorise the reproduction, distribution and public communication of the material (Videos and soundtracks) presented, as well as their adaptation to the necessary support for the purpose of their communication. These materials will become part of the AMADEUS Festival Vienna archive. In the event that the AMADEUS Festival Vienna uses any image in acts of public communication, it will always mention the name of its author.

  2. The candidates selected according to the previous paragraph authorise and give AMADEUS Festival Vienna the necessary rights to disseminate the images and videos through their social networks and other platforms. The candidates will not accrue any financial compensation for this concept.

  3. AMADEUS Festival Vienna will exclusively obtain the rights for the use, reproduction, distribution, public communication and adaptation to the necessary support of the winning candidates of the Board of Jury.

  4. All candidates selected for the finals of the competition agree to participate and cooperate in promotional campaigns (on different platforms and media) before, during and after the AMADEUS Festival Vienna.

EIGHTH. JUDGEMENT OF THE JURY

  1. Winners will be announced during the AMADEUS Festival Vienna on 28 June 2024 after the final performances. 

  2. The jury's decision will also be communicated through the competition website and the social networks of AMADEUS Festival Vienna.

  3. The jury’s decision is final. No appeals will be entertained. 

NINTH. RIGHT OF EXCLUSION 

AMADEUS Festival Vienna reserves the right to disqualify any participant from the competition if any of the following circumstances occur: 

A.  When the participant, in any way, manipulates (fraudulent or artificial) their participation in the competition.

B. When the jury considers that the work: 

  • does not fit the theme convened; 

  • contains elements that in any way can be considered contrary to fundamental rights and public liberties; 

  • induce, incite or promote hatred, criminal, denigrative, discriminatory, violent actions, in general, contrary to law or public order; 

  • are protected by any intellectual or industrial property rights; 

  • violate the right to honour personal and family privacy; 

  • constitutes advertising or that incorporate elements that may damage the normal functioning of the network, system or computer equipment. 

C. When these rules are breached in any way.

AMADEUS Festival Vienna is exempted, and not held responsible for the non-compliance of the participants in the field of intellectual, industrial or image property, as well as any responsibility that could derive from the breach or defective fulfilment by the participants in the competition of the present rules.
